Undiagnosed Macropod Seizure Syndrome

This page presents links to pathology reports and other case study information  (pre-2021). Note that this is just a small number of the joeys that have been affected. For other data on the breadth of cases see our Other Data page.

Australian Registry of Wildlife Health has been assisting to investigate the illness. If you do have a joey with a suspected case and you are in a position to collect samples, the following has been requested: Live animals (collecting whole blood and serum prior to treatment and keeping that frozen); Post mortems (anyone conducting necropsies locally can contact The Registry for advice on what to collect).

  1. Carers on the Central Coast of NSW have been experiencing very similar symptoms in 2020/2021. "The fatality rate on the Central Coast area is extremely high within both wildlife organisations, and the amount of seizures and severity and symptoms of the seizures has been so different for every macropod". WIRES Central Coast has submitted two case studies:

    - Case study of Alice (Red-necked wallaby)
  2. Marmalade (Red-necked wallaby) - Died 13/12/19 - Necropsy performed Currumbin - report dated 21/3/20 (from Taronga Zoo/Australian Registry of Wildlife Health - TARZ-13390.1 ) - Pathology report
  3. Ruby (Red-necked wallaby) - Died 13/12/19 suddenly after some initial symptoms of the illness (hypersensitivity, panicking) and had had no prior treatments - Necropsy performed Lismore DPI - Report dated 21/3/20 (from Taronga Zoo/Australian Registry of Wildlife Health - TARZ-13389.1) - Pathology report - Image Lungs
